Crude bombs found in Madurai, a major disaster averted

In the temple city, Madurai, crude bombs were found in a gutter on Ring Road. The explosives were packed in steel tiffin boxes. They contained aluminum powder, gun powder, steel pieces, screws, shaving blades, iron balls, pebbles and nails according to Sanjeev Kumar Inspector General of Police.

A bag containing explosive steel containers was first identified by Mahesh of Rajapalayam, who works in a hydraulic equipment workshop. He tried opening the tiffin box and when it did not give way threw it into a near by water hole. Then he tried opening the second box and when he tossed, it exploded causing injury to his face and leg. He immediately alerted the police.

The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad defused ten bombs.

According to Sanjeev Kumar, such bombs were used by rowdy elements to target rival groups and hence a terrorist link is ruled out. He added that the explosives could have caused an impact to a radius of 20m, if exploded.
